Mother's Day Is Coming

Mother's Day is going to be on a Sunday this year. Celebrated on May 12th, here in the USA,  it was created by Anna Jarvis in 1907 in honour of her mother, and to honour all mothers.

Being English myself, I have 2 Mother's Days to remember, as - in England - it originated as a religious event, and is usually the nearest Sunday to March 25th. There, it's known as Mothering Sunday and is 9 months before December 25th. Coming in Spring, it celebrated motherhood and the birth of young.

Mothers are special people. We carry our children, give birth to them, and raise them, hopefully into being decent human beings. A mother's "work" never ends, it seems, and there have been countless studies over the years about how much a mother is "worth" if they were to be paid for what they do.

There are so many ways to "thank" our mothers for caring for us. Traditionally, bouquets of flowers, chocolates, perfumes have been given and way back in 1967 (when I was a child, in England), I spent the earnings from my (I was 11 years old) paper round, on "the Rise and Fall of Flingel Bunt" by the Shadows. I knew my mum would love it, and it was something that would last.

Experiences are another great way to celebrate our mothers, a spa day, lunch at a place she would usually never go to or afford, taking her to do something she's always wanted to do, just memorable things that will be cherished long after the day is over.

However you choose to honour your mum, remember to be thankful that you have her. Let her know how much you love and appreciate her. Not everyone is lucky enough to still have their mothers to celebrate with.
